Soviet Union agrees to free U S fliers over East Germany
The Soviet Union will release two American airmen shot down March 10 over East German airspace, with the third crew member freed earlier. Secretary of State Dean Rusk announced on Face the Nation that the fliers would soon be back in the United States, noting no deal with East Germany. The airmen are Captains David J. Holland and Melvin J. Kessler and Lt. Harold W. Welch, all U S crew members of a reconnaissance plane. The United States had refused to deal with East Germany, maintaining the Soviets occupied East Germany. President Johnson provided no comment on Welch’s release.
