Prayer and Sweat on Six Hour Flight

Eighty five passengers and crew endured a six hour low level flight on two of four engines from Hawaii to California aboard a Military Air Transport Super Constellation. The crew split to two planes for the return trip to Travis Air Force Base while passengers retraced the route, many recalling fear during the prior leg when engines failed near the point of no return. Some baggage was jettisoned to conserve fuel and the plane limped into Hilo after dusk, escorted by Coast Guard and Air Force rescue aircraft as two engines failed and an extra engine finally landed the craft.
