Senators of the South Against Rights Stand on Truman
A New York Times poll of 14 Democratic Senate candidates for 1948 shows only three ready to be counted as pro human rights. Washington reports 13 of 24 questioned are incumbents from the deep South. Secretary Clinton P. Anderson seeks Hatch’s seat in New Mexico. Only two would support Truman for re election, Murray of Montana and Green of Rhode Island. Anderson says he is running as a Truman Democrat but a Truman supporter. Southern senators duck the Truman label, few on record, many opposing him politically. Statements from senators include Basuand of Mississippi, Eilender of Louisiana, McClellan of Arkansas, W Lee of Nine, Sparkuman of Alabama, all signaling varied, cautious stances toward civil liberties and party alignment.
