Associated Press forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms spreading across Arkansas Friday. The National Weather Service warned precipitation starts in the northwest tonight as winds shift to the southeast and expand statewide.

Amtrak said he was glad to be back on a passenger train after Mopac’s St Louis to Texarkana service ended in May 1971. The route used the same tracks via Newport Hoxie and Corning into Missouri, with fares near 15 dollars for the Little Rock to St Louis leg and 15.50 on Amtrak. The trip took 74 hours versus 7 hours previously, with ongoing talks to raise speeds and improve connections at Laredo and St Louis.

Local walkers in Hope will test stamina by the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon on March 23, 1974. The 22.9 mile event is sponsored by the Phi Beta Lambda Club of Red River Vocational Technical School. Participants seek pledges per mile, stamp walk cards at checkpoints, and collect pledges after the event. Registration and sponsor sheets are available at local schools, the vocational school, and several banks and insurers.
Washington AP reports proposed bills before a Senate panel seek to curb access to FBI national computerized criminal records. Critics warn such limits would erode the public right to know and hinder reporting on arrests and convictions. Supporters say privacy protections justify restricting data after set time periods.

AP&L reports January consumption up 9 percent from 1973 despite conservation efforts. February figures show a slight decline. SWEPCO, based in Shreveport, says January–February total electricity use fell 4.7 percent from a year earlier. AP&L serves about 61,500 Arkansas customers with 925,700 kilowatts used in January and 794,490 in February. The 1973 February figure was 802,825. The spokesman offered no reason for the month-to-month changes and could not confirm daylight saving time effects.
