Gov. Dale Bumpers seeks 7.35 million dollars in the next biennium, with state approval moving a community college funding bill forward in Little Rock. The measure targets expanded programs and facilities amid ongoing higher education funding debates.

In Little Rock on Monday Senator Max Howell of Jacksonville announced support for increasing the State Police budget by 500000 annually and restoring cuts to the Criminal Investigation Division. The Joint Budget Committee approved the revised funding, enabling hiring of many of the 60 requested state troopers. The panel also endorsed allowing the Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services to transfer up to 10 percent of one division’s funding to another, potentially saving up to 3 million yearly.

Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Rose III, back from a Vietnam prison camp last week, wed Donna Steele in a 15 minute Roman Catholic ceremony at Valley Forge General Hospital. The couple had been engaged six years, with the bride awaiting his return. a judge waived the waiting period and the Army provided private quarters for the event. The honeymoon follows his medical checkup and prisoner debriefing.
Edward H. Bahlow 70 of Patmos died in Texarkana hospital. Survived by wife Exa and six sisters. Funeral at Central Church of Christ with burial in Central Cemetery. Floyd Stephen Roberts 29 of Little Rock military funeral at Herndon Chapel. Parents DuVal and Doris Chargin sibling list. W Lynn King 70 of Lewisville died March 12. Survived by wife Mary, three daughters, son, four sisters, seven grandchildren. Funeral in Lewisville Tuesday.
Cong announced tonight that an American war prisoner held longer than any other U.S. sol dier in history is among those being released Friday. Also among the 32 prisoners being turned over at Hanoi's Gia Lam Airport is the highest ranking U.S. civilian official captured by the Communists. A young Marine supposedly killed in Vietnam and buried by his family four years ago but who later turned up alive also is coming out. The longest held American captive is Maj. Floyd Thompson, captured March 26, 1964, in Quang Tri Province. He will have spent 3,277 days as a prisoner of war.
The original English version of the Oberammergau Passion Play will play Texarkana College Auditorium March 14 to 16 with a matinee at 1 PM and an 8:15 PM show each day. An experiment station report covers 24 hours ending 7 a.m. Tuesday with a high of 81 and a low of 45. State forecasts for Arkansas call for scattered showers and thunderstorms ending from the west tonight, followed by mostly cloudy and warm conditions. Tonight will see lows mid 50s to low 60s, with Wednesday highs mid 70s to low 80s as clearing and warmth resume.
Howell said he is within knocking distance of the votes needed to pass the administration backed highway program in the Arkansas Senate. The House approved the measure 75 to 0 last week, and the plan calls for 32 million dollars a year for two years then 30 million annually, with 12 million from a one cent per gallon gasoline tax, 18 million from federal revenue sharing, and 2 million from state surplus funds in each of the first two years. Brandon doubts a Senate amendment to favor a Little Rock Pine Bluff four lane will be pursued, after an amendment to fund that via 3.45 million a year was dropped.
