Train Wreck near Hope Leaves Dozen Hurt and Two Dead
The Sunshine Special from Missouri Pacific derailed at Chelsea Siding three miles west of Hope at 1:15 a.m. on June 3, 1918. Engine and nine coaches left the track, killing engineer Charles Derringer and fireman A Walker. Twenty others were injured as relief trains carried victims to Texarkana and Little Rock. The crash was blamed on an open rail switch secured by iron, possibly the work of a national enemy, with multiple similar incidents reported nearby.
