LITTLE ROCK AP El Dorado Newport Prescott and Gravette were named state champions today in community development in 1964. Winners were announced at the 15th annual Arkansas Community Development Contest luncheon. Each winning city received 750 for taking first place in their population division. Second-place winners were Blytheville Stuttgart Mountain Home and Sparkman. Each second place city receives 250. The contest recognizes cities participating in the community development programsponsored by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and other groups.
In Detroit area a riot followed a regional tournament loss as Highland Park High School fans clashed with Detroit Northwestern supporters. Nine white youths were stabbed and a 13 year old Negro girl injured by flying glass. James Lucas, 16, was stabbed in the heart and listed in fair condition after surgery. Police labeled the riot racially motivated with assailants described as Negro youths.
Kodiak city manager Ralph Jones announced March 27 as the Alaska earthquake anniversary fundraiser to aid an Oregon flood victims’ program. Seward will observe the Sunday after Easter as an annual memorial day, city manager Fred Waltz said.

Arkansas rule limiting railroad crews to a full team was ruled inoperable by a federal panel. Viet Cong squads attacked near Da Nang while Marines guard the air base. A Marine adviser was killed and another wounded in a separate ambush in Binh Dinh about 100 miles south. No Da Nang casualties reported as ships resumed unloading after a brief stoppage.
The third first degree murder trial of Frank Harris of Jonesboro likely to go to the jury today in Harrisburg Arkansas. Prosecutors rested their case after 29 witnesses aimed to prove a pattern of events leading to the Dever family deaths. The defense has called few witnesses and Harris remains imprisoned for a prior Dever family murder conviction.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. asserts President Johnson lacks authority to stop the planned Selma to Montgomery march. Federal Judge Frank M. Johnson issued an order prohibiting the protest as King contemplates possible contempt of court.
A veteran lie detector operator H A Albert says women take twice as long as men to tell a lie. He notes they hog conversations and use evasive tactics, often steering questions toward irrelevant topics. He adds women fear inquiries into their private life.
In Little Rock the state Republican Committee’s vice chairman faces a delay as the state withholds bank names and deposit amounts. State Treasurer Nancy J. Hall asked Attorney General Bruce Bennett for a ruling after Dr. Wayne Babbitt sought the list. Bennett’s reply was not yet received due to a conference of attorneys general.
Hope High School hosts a two day science fair March 12 13 in the old gymnasium. Senior High students must exhibit with elementary and Junior High welcome. Categories include biology chemistry physics and math with judges from Henderson State Teachers College Southern State College and Texarkana College. Public viewing Friday 6 30 9 pm and Saturday 9 am 4 pm. Co chairs are Don Sillavan and Tom Harwell with other HHS math and science instructors listed.
SHERRILL Ark AP Gil bert Lawrence Hunt 29 died Tuesday of injuries from a crop dusting plane crash near Sherrill Monday He was employed by Schady Flying Service.
All Around Town Cookbooks from the Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs are sold by the Gardenia Club with recipes from members across Arkansas including two from Hope. The Southwest Junior Festival of the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs is set for March 13 at First Baptist Church in Hope. Ann Carol Arnold, a University of Arkansas freshman, earned a 3.88 GPA and ranked 4th in her class of 978. Glenn B. Ballard of Hope is promoted to technical Sergeant in the Arkansas Air National Guard and serves with the Hot Springs unit. Patricia Davis of Hope will perform at Southern State College on March 11. Henry Moss Rowe of Washington, Arkansas, is inducted into Alpha Epsilon, an agriculture engineering honor society. Roger A. McLain, son of Mrs. Texas of Hope, has joined the U S Marine Corps.
Selma public safety director Wilson Baker ordered a halt to civil rights marches in the tense city after a Tuesday march of about 2,500 people that included clergy and the night beating of three white ministers. The decision came after talks with Mayor Joseph T. Smitherman and cites risky conditions.
In Arkansas Federal Court Judge John E Miller handed down liquor law violation sentences Tuesday. Emmett Redmen of Lewisville was fined 500 dollars and others received probation prison terms including Jones Whitfield Buckner Spearman Thomas George Sanders Edward Cunningham Orville Wayne Straw Luther Morrison Ardis Knighton and Charles Knighton with various penalties.
