Compromise Open Housing Bill Falls Short of GOP Support
Senate discussions on an open housing bill end with a 62 to 8 cloture vote for a compromise plan. The measure, sponsored by Dirksen, scales back coverage to about 70 percent of housing units, drawing opposition over private property rights. Senator Mansfield notes the chamber’s civ il rights debate has consumed much time, with four cloture votes on one bill being unprecedented.

Johnson urges restraint on travel to curb payments gap
President Johnson asks Americans to defer nonessential travel outside the Western Hemisphere to cut the $3.6 billion payments deficit. Officials cite passport trends and tax proposals targeting overseas travel as part of plans to ease the balance of payments strain. Passport applications rose 26 percent in January, with forecasts of 55,000 departures to Europe in March and 65,000 in February, despite a slowing trend after January’s surge.

Gold Rush Continues in Europe
European gold demand remains strong but lower than last week’s panic peak following the pound devaluation. In London about 40 tons changed hands, well above five tons a day but below the post-devaluation high of roughly 100 tons daily. Paris Brussels Zurich and Frankfurt report softer demand yet still above average in places. The pound slipped below its $2.40 parity briefly, then recovered. Bank of England support and a February rise in Britain’s gold reserves helped stabilize the rate. The Great Turquoise mine near Los Cerrillos, New Mexico, is noted as the region’s only known prehistoric mine, linked to the Indigenous sacred sky stone.
