Panicky public mood halted daily business as the nation awaits actions from the new Washington administration to restart credit and economic activity. The article notes a forced holiday across markets and offices as uncertainty dominates.
Governor Futrell told Arkansas County Judges that pursuing the sixth cent gasoline tax revenue could force the state into default on obligations and road district bonds. He urged keeping the turnback fund temporarily to meet highway debts and proposed a 25 year refunding plan to restore fiscal stability.

Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago remains seriously ill in Miami with improved condition. Doctors say recovery is possible as he tolerates nourishment after glucose and semi solid foods while colitis and pneumonia associated with the assassination attempt recede.
John Jones must serve 50 days in jail or pay $100 after being arrested for selling short weight to J. F. Parrish of the city measures department. Parrish says Jones sold five gallons but delivered only four and a half.
A 5-year-old boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gilbert, drowned in a rain-filled hole about three miles from Fulton on Wednesday. His 6-year-old brother went to fetch the mail, the older sibling tried to save him, a nearby woman pulled the child from the water, but he died. Funeral services were held Thursday at Crossroads cemetery.
A special committee report details that John L. McLain Jackson county clerk paid 1200 to former Assistant Attorney General Claude Duty in December 1930 to land a liquidating agent post for the Arkansas Trust company of Newport. It cites no involvement by former Bank Commissioner Walter E Taylor and notes uneven paybacks to depositors during liquidation.
The Arkansas senate approved an amended house bill for a prohibition repeal convention 29 to 0 with no debate. The measure reduces delegates from 135 to 15, one per county, and requires the convention vote to follow the statewide referendum on ratification or rejection.

Japanese forces penetrated Jehol city, the provincial capital, and began moving to cut north wall passes. Chinese reports say defenders were demoralized as refugees fled toward the Great Wall and Peiping, while the drive on the capital started at dawn from Pingchuan, fifty miles east.
In El Paso Texas detective J Frank Norfleet disguises himself with a beard to arrest swindlers. He once hunted seven confidence men who swindled him out of 45000 dollars and since then has pursued more than 150 criminals. He has never been forced to fire a shot.

The second meeting of Hope's church pastors will be held Monday at 9:00 AM in the First Methodist Church office. Dr. J. L. Cannon, pastor of First Methodist and president of the organization, will preside and welcome any minister from any denomination attending.
Two armed men jumped onto a truck and trailer carrying 48,000 pounds of sugar. They forced drivers Earnest Gibbs and William Brozek to stop, then abducted them to a garage behind a vacant house where they were held for five hours before release.
Reports say stock and cotton exchanges in New York City ended trading as bank holidays spread across New England and the Midwest. Federal Reserve banks halted gold withdrawals and several states declared governors’ proclamations. A 50 percent bank-deposit guarantee was discussed at high levels, while Hoover pocket-vetoed the cotton farmer relief bill.
Gov Futrell signed Senate Bill 331 to create a fact finding tribunal under the Corporation Commission. The body will be headed by an attorney with an accountant and an engineer, allow other staff, and be funded by a $2 per $1,000 gross revenue tax on utilities.
