Cub Scouts plan a homemade kite contest Sunday afternoon at the old airport weather permitting. Prizes for top heights and designs. Entry prior registry required and kites must fly at least a deck high. Donations from Louisiana Nevada Transit Co and Haynes Bros.
Governor Orval Faubus of Arkansas said he was under terrific pressure from New York insurance interests after a New Yorker told an attorney to name a price to defeat the administration insurance proposal. He refused to identify the attorney or the caller and warned he would not be deluged by out of state insurers.
A Los Angeles private eye testified to a Senate investigating committee that scandal sourcing comes from obtaining illicit photos and records. Fred Otash claimed he once dated Anita Aberg and supplied Confidential magazine with secret photographs of a Swedish actress. He suggested suppressing Communist and sex deviate elements from publications.
A 13 year old Hot Springs paperboy was killed instantly when his motorcycle collided with a slow freight train at the Richard Street crossing. Hermen Howard Wilhelm, a junior high student, was dragged 84 feet before the locomotive stopped. Witnesses described the train horn and the boy not seeing the train in time.

The Arkansas Senate passed a bill forcing the public service commission to consider the fair field price theory in gas rate determinations. The Teletype Corporation plans a large new plant in Little Rock with potential to employ about 1,600 people and an annual payroll near nine million dollars. The facility will manufacture telegraph printing instruments and will hire engineers in electronics metallurgy and related fields. It will be located on a 168 acre site southwest of Little Rock near the Americar Machine and Foundry Co plant.
Principal Julius Adams receives a letter from Arkansas Athletic Association praising the State A Senior Girls Basketball Tournament held in Hope in February 2024. West Memphis long troubled Southland Racing Corp signed a $300,000 second mortgage on the Southland track. President Lee R. Edmonds said J. M. Properties Co. of Ohio borrowed the funds to cover about $60,000 in overdue construction bills and recent debt suits. Edmonds and Secretary Charles J. Upon signed the mortgage on February 22, with three annual installments of $100,000 and a final payment due in 1949.
Three school districts highlight millage requests for upcoming election day on Saturday March 16. Hope District 1-A asks for five to ten extra mills to 40, Putnos District seeks three additional mills from 27 to 30 along with an at large director, Comstead District requests three more mills from 34 to 37 with a five year director term, Spring Hill aims to borrow 8711 for school building improvements and bond issuance, Blevins Watlet seeks 37 mills and a five year director plus a seat on County Board, Guernsey and Saratoga districts hold flat or unchanged taxes, and Washington District maintains last year’s millage with no increase.

The Hope Water and Light Commission bill to create permanent public commissions for municipal utilities was signed into law by Governor Orval Faubus on Thursday. The Star reports Rep. Talbot Meild Jr. provided details. The act is numbered 118 of 1957 and largely mirrors the 1955 bill vetoed by Faubus amid opposition from Paragould officials.
Burglars broke into King's Drive-in on February 2 and took 21 dollars and 50 cents in half dollars and quarters leaving a small sum in dimes and nickels. City officers and the thieves broke down the back door as the investigation continues.

The plan sets a 20 cent per vote spending limit based on prior popular vote, caps national and state committee expenditures, restricts individual contributions to 1000 yearly totals, and requires detailed pre and post election reports for candidates and committees.
Israel travels to the United Nations to spell out plans to withdraw all troops from the Sarm el Sheikh area of Aqaba and the Gaza Strip. Washington and Paris seek broad support for a UN backed force and potential UN military administration to remain until a new status is agreed. Egyptian foreign minister Mahmoud Fawzi condemns the move as unacceptable and warns any pullout must not be part of a bargain.
Seventeen Arkansas farmers and cotton men will try to settle a dispute over a proposed fabrics merchandising course in the state vocational education program. Education Commissioner Arch Nerd said a 17 member advisory committee would meet in Little Rock tonight to discuss the course. The course was withdrawn after protests by cotton men who objected to synthetic fibers while some cotton men supported continuing the course. They argue cotton qualities compare favorably with any fiber.
Early this week a change of ownership and management for the BRR Hamm Motor Co is reported with the shop to reopen Monday under Byron Hefner and James James. A local partnership split and a new business unrelated to BRR are expected to be announced soon, while Morgan and Lindsey Building gains a grant and 442 chambers will travel to Little Rock for national competition.
