8th and 88th Infantry Divisions Break German Lines in Italy
The s8th Infantry Division joined the 85th as the first all draft unit team to enter major battle in Italy under Maj. Gen. John E. Sloan of Greenville South Carolina. The 88th pursued Germans through the Ausente Valley and breached the Gustav Line at Santa Maria.
