A tribute recalling Helen Keller as an emblem of perseverance. Born in Alabama, she became blind and deaf at 19 months yet learned to read Braille and speak. Anne Sullivan guided her rise as a speaker whose influence spanned the 20th century.
Robert S. Shriver, head of the antipoverty effort, testified before a Senate Labor subcommittee that the program has aided 3.1 million people and will grow to 5.9 million next year. He cited 102 new job centers 100 community action grants 75 000 college students helped 260 090 youths in Youth Corps 10 000 student loans 88 000 adults in work experience and 530 060 children in Head Start preschool programs.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP The space agency postponed the Tiros 10 weather satellite launch to Thursday night to fix radio frequency problems that hindered proper checkout of the spacecraft from the ground.
The weather report for four hours ending at 7 a.m. Tuesday shows a high of 93 and a low of 71. Central Arkansas will be clear to partly cloudy and warm through Wednesday with isolated thundershowers affecting up to 20 percent of the area.
Wilford Metcalf of Cocke County challenged a government timber seizure after a ranger said the land belonged to the U S government. A new survey credited Metcalf with ownership, and a bill for 1717.52 will be dropped. Congressman James Quillen pledges further action to secure Metcalf's payout.
Denise Winter, 15, recounts swimming half a mile and wandering two days after her family's 45 foot cabin cruiser sank off Baja California. Five aboard included Denise, her mother Mary Beth, sister Sheree, brother Lance, and stepfather Warren Winter. The Coast Guard suspended then renewed a search near La Punta San Fernando, 190 miles south of San Diego, for the missing three.
The Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy will open next month likely at Camp Abinson near Little Rock. Opening date and site depend on selecting an academy director and small staff. The academy will be financed by a $105,000 annual appropriation for two years from the 1965 General Assembly.
Ernest Loring Nichols known as Red Nichols and leader of the Five Pennies combo died at 60 after a heart attack in his motel room in Las Vegas. The Ogden Utah native helped launch careers of Benny Goodman Gene Krupa and Glenn Miller among others. He had recently performed at the Mint Casino and left a note requesting a doctor.
The Hempstead County Farm Bureau will hold its regular monthly board meeting on Thursday night July 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Farm Bureau office. Two films Life of the Soil and Reptiles will be shown, and President Lester Kent urges all members and interested persons to attend.
Welda Lee Derr of Hope Arkansas was sentenced to 10 years in the state penitentiary for second degree murder in the 1962 death of Thomas Bond of Shreveport. Jerrell K. Marlar, already serving a life term for first degree murder, was involved in the crime. Bond was kidnapped in Bossier City kidnapped, robbed, and transported to Miller County where he was shot by Marlar.
Desegregation in Morriston Arkansas could lead to eight Negro teachers being hired at white schools if openings exist. Superintendent Terry Humble and school officials say no new faculty are likely needed as enrollment shifts leave Sullivan High School closed. Clement S. Smith sues in Little Rock alleging the district hired extra staff previously to avoid future hiring.
A special Alabama legislative committee claims the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee is extensively Communist dominated and that CORE is a major arm of a procommunist conspiracy. The report accuses SCLC led by Martin Luther King Jr. of promoting the Communist line and notes King’s rise parallels Communist activity in the 1950s. It also says King may not belong to the Communist Party but cites his alleged ties to fronts and groups aligned with Communist aims.
Police chief Alvin Willis said three black youths, all minors, were charged in the June 24 burglary of Davis Discount House, where $50 and several checks were taken. The oldest had just been paroled from the State Boys Industrial School. Nine other youths, ages 4 to 19, were also detained for related burglaries at several local businesses.
The Hope Lions Club last night installed new officers and honored members. L. F. Slatton was named Lion of the Year, Margie Herndon chosen to represent the area in the Forestry Queen Contest, and Cecil O'Steen received a perfect attendance award for 14 years. About 25 members were recognized for perfect attendance.
Arkansas bottlers have raised wholesale prices by 25 cents per case to 1.50, with many retailers passing the increase to customers. The move follows a November hike by other bottlers and affects Coca Cola, Dr Pepper, Royal Crown, Nehi, Mountain Dew, Pepsi Cola and more as production costs push higher.
Chancellor Murray O Reed ruled Act 73 of 1963 unconstitutional in Little Rock. The law charged river stabilization trucks much higher license fees than non river work haulers with NR tags. Suit argued truckers paid 510 to 650 dollars while others paid up to 50 dollars.
Revival services are underway at Corinth Baptist Church led by Evangelist Rev. Arlis Downs and Pastor Rev. William Willis. Services are held twice daily at 10 a.m. and 7 30 p.m. through July 4.
The Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a 1.6 mile I-30 construction contract in Miller County from the Red River levee to the river bridge to W. R. Fairchild Co. for 380 551 dollars on the low bid. Also notes a high school band invitation in Baton Rouge and other town items.
U S and Vietnamese paratroops joined in a ground operation about 30 miles north of Saigon with roughly 1 200 men lifted by helicopters. An American paratrooper was killed by a Viet Cong grenade, and another wounded, as Australian infantry supported the action.
NAACP leaders attack the U S poverty program calling it white welfare paternalism and describe it as a limited effort. Roy Wilkins urges enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to address core problems. Herbert Hill highlights Title 7 to end job discrimination.
Arkansas Education Commissioner A W Ford announces the merger of the Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America with the New Farmers of America and the New Homemakers of America. All state education programs will be desegregated, including summer camps at Camp Ouachita near Hot Springs. Headquarters remain in the Education Building in Little Rock.
