Education Bill Blocked By Five Republicans On Panel

On the House Education and Labor Committee a five Republican bloc and Democrat William Colmer of Mississippi defeated a larger expenditure plan. Rayburn gained two administration supporters to eight, but James J. Delaney and Thomas P. O Neil Jr. joined Smith to block the bill. The panel approved long-term loans for parochial schools for nonreligious purposes, sending the measure to the Rules Committee, likely ending action on both bills until Rules weighs the defense education extension with church school provisions.
