Trains Collide Near Frankfurt on the Oder Killing 27

An express passenger train and a freight train collided near Lebus on the Polish border 5 miles north of Frankfurt on the Oder and 4 miles east of Berlin. Twenty seven people died and seven were injured as fire and wreckage were cleared over hours by rescue teams. The passenger train traveled from Zittau to Stralsund and the freight's tank cars reportedly caught fire.

Arkansas Supreme Court Upholds Death Penalty in Woodard Case

The Arkansas Supreme Court affirmed the death sentence for Billy Woodard in a capital felony murder case from Poinsett County. Woodard shot C. M. Baker during a robbery on Sept. 3, 1975 after a planned car trip for a trailer search ended with Baker loading gas and Woodard firing a .12 gauge shotgun.

42 Die As Pad Cell Fire At Tennessee Jail

A 16 year old inmate, Andy Zinmer, faces arson charges as investigators probe a pad cell fire at Maury County Jail in Columbia Tennessee. The blaze killed 42 people including inmates and visitors and injured many more.

Weekend wrecks leave two collisions with minor injuries

Four wrecks occurred over the weekend. Saturday at 5 p.m. at South Hervey and Division Streets Doris Weatherton of Dumas pulled from a stop sign and was struck by Gaylon W. Calhoun of Hope. no charges filed. Sunday at about 4:13 p.m. at North Hervey Pond and Avenue A Bonnie Lee Powell of Hope tried to turn onto Pond Street and was hit from behind by John David Little of Hope who was charged with following too close.

Nitrite in meat cancer risk examined by panel

A U S panel led by Assistant Agriculture Secretary Carol Tucker Foreman reviews evidence on sodium nitrite used to cure bacon ham hot dogs and other meats. Nitrite prevents botulism and preserves color but may form nitrosamines linked to cancer under high heat frying or digestion.

Court limits desegregation busing in Dayton ruling

The Supreme Court sent Dayton desegregation remedies back for a narrower plan, keeping in effect the current busing for 18 000 students for another year while cautions apply. The decision signals restraint on federal court remedies without establishing new constitutional rules. Robberies Hit Three Local Businesses Over Weekend

Over the weekend three local businesses were burglarized. The Town and Country Restaurant was entered at the side door with 300 dollars in cash taken. Montgomery Wards suffered a break in with one car battery and four CB radios stolen. Hope Floral reported a small amount of change missing.

Forty four rural fire departments receive equipment grants

Arkansas Forestry Commission awarded 55 200 dollars in equipment grants to 44 rural departments under Title IV of a three year pilot. Limits were 5000 per county wide unit and 1000 per single department with 76 applications. Almost 115 communities benefited via these grants.
