House rejects plan to stifle missile project
Washington AP report says the House rejected an effort to halt missile and equipment purchases for the Safeguard antimissile system as defense spending faced cuts of more than 1.6 billion amid Moscow arms accords. Rep. Leggett proposed cutting 350 million for Safeguard, mostly to stop purchases for an antimissile site near Washington, but the amendment failed 258 to 117. The House also rejected a voice-vote cut of 247 million in antisubmarine destroyers, aiming to kill a major Navy shipbuilding job.
