Court nominations stir Senate critics and support across parties

Canadians Elect First Negro Canadian MP in Hamilton West
Lincoln MacAuley Alexander, son of a railroad porter, wins Hamilton West seat by 268 votes to become Canada’s first Black MP. He credits 500 youth supporters and campaign issues over race, and says he hopes to be known simply as the member from Hamilton West. The victory blocks a Liberal sweep in Hamilton’s four districts and comes as Hamilton West also elects a woman to Parliament. Alexander notes race was not a campaign issue, and he plans to focus on policies and youth support.
