Georgia Firm Low Bidder on Road Jobs
A Georgia firm posted the apparent lowest bid as the Arkansas Highway Commission opened bids for nearly $9 million in road and bridge projects. Wright Construction Co. of Columbus bid 2,467,097.48 for surfacing 10.4 miles of Interstate 40 in Lonoke County from Highway 31 east to the Prairie County line. Other bids include Polk and Cedar Creek Coal Co. in Oklahoma, Hot Spring and Saline surfacing on I-40, Lonoke and Prairie surfacing on I-40, Faulkner roadbed prep for I-40, and Clark and Hot Spring roadbed prep on I-30 by McGeorge Construction Co. Jackson County Constable Hu bert W. Alford reported two civil rights workers arrested for vagrancy and investigation in Moss Point Mississippi. Howard Kirchenbaum of Long Beach New York and Ronald Ridenour of Venice California were taken after being found in the Jackson Park Negro settlement. Kirchenbaum was arrested first and Ridenour fled briefly before capture as they claimed to canvass homes in the area with four others.
