Treasury faces debt ceiling clash amid June 1967 actions
Henry H. Fowler warned of a Treasury crunch if the debt ceiling bill fails. The current temporary cap is 336 billion dollars, with a permanent 285 billion set to take effect at the start of the new fiscal year. The House has approved raising the permanent ceiling to 358 billion plus 7 billion after July 1, 1968. The Senate Finance Committee is expected to back the plan. The House also weighs compromise authorization for the National Teachers Corps at 135 million over three years, with 90 percent federal funding. If not granted by Friday, 3.8 million in current-year funds could be lost. Senate leaders aim for quick action if the House passes the bill.
