Hope Depot Move Sparks 1873 Railroad War Gain
In 1873 the Cairo & Fulton railroad chose Hope for its depot, not Guernsey, after James W. Stephenson and Dr. Taylor donated land. The first train arrived August 20 1873, triggering local celebrations and the city’s incorporation in 1875. Water was scarce, paged by early tank-wagon operators, and the railroad era reshaped Hope’s growth, politics, and church life through decades of service.
