Shippers Win Battle Over Watermelon Car Equipment
The dispute between shippers and railroads over watermelon transport ends with shippers prevailing. The Southwestern Freight Bureau struck a proposed rule that would have made carriers supply suitable rolling stock for perishable consignments. Railroads argued that carriers should not bear the sole obligation to furnish equipment. The decision cited risks from venting, dust, and damage in transit and held that carriers must provide proper cars. Continued discussion noted on page three.
