Rules City Right to Set Clerk Fees in Magnolia Case
The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled Magnolia City Council may fix the Municipal Court Clerk salary up to 3000 with 1800 set in 1981, overruling a lower court and citing the law as a base only, while allowing cities to determine an amount not exceeding 3000 per year. The decision involved J W Kendrick, Magnolia city clerk, who argued his salary should be at least 2400. This ruling overruled a prior interpretation and addressed related chancery actions and contempt proceedings in separate cases.

Sherwood scientist commits suicide over subcommittee probe
William K Sherwood, 41, an outside scientist, killed himself yesterday rather than appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. A committee spokesman said he had been offered immunity in exchange for information, a claim Sherwood’s friends dispute. His death followed a paper he drafted linking cancer, schizophrenia, and heart disease. The case sparked debate as the Supreme Court limited convictions of Californa Communist defendants.
