Four Hope State students Judith Holly Croom Ronald Gibson Bruce Bernier McRae Tina Martin and David William Rowe of Washington joined the University of Arkansas June 14 16 for a new orientation program. Arkansas Revenue Department will refund 1.784 million dollars in documentary stamp taxes after the state Supreme Court ruled the 1969 tax act unconstitutional. Hope residents vote on a $250000 Act 9 Bond Issue on June 23 to finance Meyer's Bakery expansion. The plan would add 45 new jobs by August 1, 1970, bringing total plant employment to over 200 on a two shift basis, with payroll rising to about $1.25 million for 1970-71. The issue carries no tax backing and bonds are tax free, with Meyer's paying equivalent local taxes if tax free status is removed. Twenty one bicyclists calling themselves Ambassadors on Wheels halted in Hope on a 1100 mile trip from Alexandria Indiana to Dallas Texas. They left Benton early Monday aiming 100 miles daily. They stay at churches or mortuaries with Oakcrest Mortuary serving as headquarters. The group seeks both a physical challenge and Bible study plus nightly devotions led by a singing team. A spokesman notes this is their third year of travel with a support truck carrying clothing and gear.
Last minute filings with the Hempstead County Democratic Central Committee show opposition to state representative Mack McLarty and state Senator Olen Hendrix. Arthur Streeh will oppose McLarty. The State of Arkansas vs Richard Neal Williams seated at noon Tuesday in Hempstead County. Williams faces first degree murder charges in the March 29 deaths of Paul Parsons and LeDean Cassidy on Highway 4 near Bingen. Testimony began at 2 p.m. with Circuit Judge William H.
