Big Ear Radio Telescope Opens For Scientific Study
The Arecibo Observatory houses the 2.5 million watt transmitter and 1,000 foot reflector opened in 1963. Designed by William E. Gordon at Cornell, it conducts ionospheric radar studies planetary radar and radio astronomy across the electromagnetic spectrum. Able to operate day and night, it probes space billions of light years beyond visible light limits.
