Jas Corhmission will become assistant dean of Magnolia A. and M. College in November, announced by Dr S. Wilkins, president. Kibbee is son of motion picture actor Guy Kibbee. He will report after completing the survey of higher education in Arkansas.
The North Arkansas conference of the Methodist church voted to shelve for a year a proposed 400,000 pension plan for its ministers. The 114th annual meeting opened yesterday in North Little Rock as the group pledged cooperation with the Arkansas Temperance League to push for state dry laws this summer.
Kibbee arrived in Arkansas as assistant to Dr Norman Bue of the University of Chicago and serves as technical director of the survey. He holds a master’s degree in education and is pursuing a doctor’s degree while contributing to the state sponsored commission.
Sheriffs deputies and FBI agents yesterday arrested Frank Stokes 31 in Hot Springs Arkansas on a federal charge related to a Fort Wayne Indiana shooting. FBI agent Scott S Alden Little Rock said Stokes fired nine times at two men wounding one in the thigh and fled across state lines.
The North Arkansas conference hints at shelving the large plan for a year by sending it to the conference committee on world service and finance for study. Methodists would contribute 400000 toward a permanent pension fund in the proposal. Rev. Cecil Culver, Fort Smith district superintendent, urged cooperation with the Arkansas Temperance League in a dry campaign. The conference expected further discussion today. It reported 7261 new members in the past year and a World Service contribution of 112776, surpassing the requested amount by 4454. The conference continues through Sunday.
U S Rep John Davis Lodge won the Republican nomination for Connecticut governor on the first ballot at New Haven. Lodge, 46, brother of Sen Henry Cabot Lodge Jr and grandson of Sen Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., received 358 votes, with 310 needed. The convention also eyed two U S Senate seats and other state offices, with Joseph E B Talbot and Prescott Bush viewed as likely candidates. Knowland urged a hard line against Soviet Russia and China, warning against admitting Communist China to the United Nations and noting embassies could become espionage hubs.
