Grasshopper Threats Grow as Drouth Expands Range
County maps show critical hopper populations from 30 to 200 per square yard. New poisons chloradane and toxaphene will be spread by planes over infested zones. Four tenths of an ounce in five pounds of bran covers an acre. USDA expects 95 percent relative insect loss. Half-grown hoppers could swarm within 10 days, laying eggs by July end and threatening grain on ranges as Iverson notes 30 grasshoppers per yard eat 350 pounds of forage per acre.
