Showers Expected to End Thursday Across Regions

The Associated Press reports showers should wrap up by Thursday, clearing toward a dry weekend. Temperatures drop tonight with lows in the upper sixties and highs Thursday near the 70s. The National Weather Service forecasts little or no precipitation Friday through Sunday, with similar mild conditions overall.

Obituary: Mrs Novella Powell of Texarkana Dies

Mrs Novella Powell age 64 of Texarkana Ark died Tuesday afternoon in a Texarkana hospital. Survived by husband James A Powell four daughters and three sons including James H Powell of Vandenberg AFB and Robert and Larry Powell of Texarkana. Funeral set for Thursday at 1 pm at the City Baptist Church with East Funeral Home in charge.

Powers School Building Dedication Set for June 15

The Powers district will dedicate the Community Center in the Powers school building on June 15 with a buffet and program at 6 p.m. Rev. W. G. Wynn will speak, and Supt. Joe Balentine will dedicate the building. Tickets are available at the door. Powers is about seven miles west of Hope on Old Highway 67.

Kiwanis club hears district governor on amendments

Kiwanis Missouri Arkansas District Governor Dean Murphy spoke unofficially at the Town and Country restaurant. He outlined proposed Kiwanis International by law changes to be voted on at the Denver convention and urged delegates guidance on controversial items including a proposed lottery fundraising option. The Hope club was praised by Murphy as possibly the best in Mo Ark. Guests included Bob Whitmarsh, Harry Lundgaard, and Mitch Fenley.

River search continues for three missing fishermen near Lake Arbonne

In Farmerville due to strong currents and rising water in Lake Arbonne the search for three adolescent fishermen swept over the spillway continued Tuesday officials said the lake is one of three North Louisiana lakes rising after weekend rainfall with water flowing nearly six feet over the spillway as operations resumed this morning and authorities sought names of the missing youths

Ambulance talk covers Hempstead Service and costs

At the Hope Lions luncheon, Hempstead County Ambulance Service leaders James Vess and Larry Moses outlined the 24 hour operation begun February 4, 1970, training advances to 200 hours, and community subsidies of 30,000 from the city and 9,000 from the county. They reported 522 annual runs, 40 to 50 calls since start, and noted private fees cover excess costs.
