A case recaps forged money orders totaling 1400 dollars stolen from Kedron Arkansas post office in July 1946. Conspirators used a fake name forged driver license and social security card to cash them at Arkansas post offices. Post office department Harris aimed to recover losses.
Washington expects individual life insurance dividends for World War II veterans who paid premiums on at least three months since October 1947. The audit and distribution are planned for late summer with totals varying by policy. some could reach up to 500 dollars, aiming to cover through the policy anniversary.
President Truman visits Little Rock for the coming one and a half day reunion of the 42nd Infantry Division. Crowd banners greet him, some facing the division headquarters, as arrangements adjust for the parade and ceremonies. Carload arrivals swell the city as veterans, adopted sons of Little Rock, prep for events tomorrow and the two day meet.
A severe storm struck southeastern Nebraska damaging Belvidere and nearby towns. The tornado damaged many buildings including a bank and a two story structure while injuring several residents. One hospital reported multiple casualties and emergency crews treated victims as police aided in the aftermath.
A court sentence set youths in their twenties on $4,600 bonds with payment of court costs required. Judge Hartigen suspended part of the sentence and released the youths to comply with costs, after earlier reports of a body found in the Black River years ago.
Washington reports, based on House appropriations testimony, that Congress talks much and asks many questions. John J. DeViny notes high page counts for Congress records. 22,000 questions projected this year show a skyrocketing curiosity compared with 1925.
Meat industry officials focus on larvae feeding on Wyoming and Montana ranges as grasshoppers mature. They eat diverse crops from corn to cactus and even threaten newspapers and nylon hose. Government aims to use poisoned bran to control the pest.
British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin, speaking at the Labour party conference in Blackpool after leaving Paris, warned that no dictator talks peace while preparing for war. He suggested the possibility of an unwritten accommodation with the Soviet Union and called for firm resolve to avoid being drawn into conflicting principles. He also noted the Atlantic Ocean surface is saltier than that of other oceans as a cryptic aside.
Arkansas health officials warn polio activity may be rising this year with at least 34 infantile paralysis cases reported since January 1. Dr. T. T. Ross of the state health department says the situation is not serious yet despite more cases than in the early 1946 epidemic. Four cases have been reported in Craighead County with impressions of spread elsewhere as the year progresses.
Fred Walters, former Louisville Colonels manager, was named playing manager of the Chattanooga Lookouts, replacing Stud Myatt who moves to Orlando. Walters will assume duties in Atlanta as President Joe Engle announced potential further changes to boost the Lookouts in the Southern Association pennant race. Walters previously won the 1948 Southern Association playoff title with the Birmingham Barons and beat Fort Worth in the Dixie series.
Dr. Ross said two Monette youngsters remain under observation after several cases. Dr. A M Washburn, director of the communicable disease division, visited Monette to review the outbreak. Mississippi and Desha counties each report five polio cases this year, with three in each county occurring in May. Victims fell ill in the early months of the year. We have a watchful eye on the situation. There is no cause for alarm at present.
