Sponsors of a movement to require a popular vote on the 1961 Congressional redistricting act filed first referral petitions with Secretary of State Nancy Hail. Six Children Die in Portageville House Fire
In Portageville Missouri six children perished when a home burned Monday night. A seventh child was critically burned and the mother Jesse Mae Forest was treated for shock as she fled the blaze in her nightgown. Neighbors Jimmy Davis and Van Adams rescued Michael Forest nine, who suffered burns over sixty percent of his body and was hospitalized. The house and all belongings were destroyed. Dead children ranged from one to five years old: Aaron ten, Don seven, Emma Mae six, Kayger six, Rabbis one, and Jennett two. The Forests are Negroes.
