Icebox Deaths Puzzle Officers In Walnut Ridge
Walnut Ridge officers moved the investigation of three child deaths to a tar paper shack near the farm where the bodies were found in an old ice box last Friday. Sheriff Spades said nine neighbors have been eliminated after late-night questioning, with one suspect admitting self. The children were found after mother Ed Chastain returned from the fields around 5:30 p.m. Federal authorities and state officials, including Gov. McMath's appointees, joined the probe. Investigators lean toward accident theory as high winds may have shut the ice box door, possibly trapping the children who may have climbed inside out of fear. The box was moved for scientific tests to determine survival time.
