Private Taylor recalls early invasion chaos and hunt for division

In a firsthand account, Taylor describes jumping from 500 feet, fighting to free himself from a parachute, and wandering amid hedgerows as indiscriminate fire raged. He recounts using a cricket-like identification tool, reuniting with fellow Americans, and slowly assembling a force of about 0 to 90 men from 800 in the area. The mission: seize four causeways to enable inland movement. General Anthony McAuliffe and other brass were present, but only about 20 riflemen remained. Taylor notes the dispersal proved advantageous and that they secured the causeways, completing the mission.
