Bradley County Tomatoes Bring $130 For First Basket
The first basket of Bradley County tomatoes was sold today in Warren for 130 dollars. Willie Ferrell of Godfrey Place brought them in with son Glen, sold to Allen Bellamy of a grocery chain. County Agent Ray Hunter notes 1,500 acres of tomatoes in the county are expected to match last year’s market value of 1,960,000 dollars, with about 850 families involved in production. The crop, picked pink for shipment to eastern and northern markets, marks the county’s largest and most valuable harvest to date. The second basket arrived an hour later from W. L. Colvin’s Eagle Lake farm. Tomato sales open June 10 and run through mid July.
