Arizona Wins Right to River Water
The Supreme Court with major modifications backed Arizona in the 40 year Colorado River water dispute with California. It approved portions of a master’s decree while reserving rulings on others and set deadlines for drafting decrees to carry out the court’s 52 page opinion. California gets 4.4 million acre feet annually, Arizona 2.8 million, and Nevada 0.3 million, with complexities over shortages and apportionment left to the interior secretary’s discretion. Justice Black read the opinion. Chief Justice Warren did not participate.
