Tropical low mood shifts westward across Arkansas

A tropical low pressure system over the southern Mississippi River area was located today and drifting slowly westward. The National Weather Service said the circulation around the low may raise moisture and increase the chance of showers in Arkansas Wednesday.

Health program plan to form private health systems group

The Southwest and Southeast Arkansas Planning Districts will merge health planning programs and form a private nonprofit corporation to apply as a Health Systems Agency under Public Law 93-641. Future home energy saver on Sixth Street

Builder Bob Odom showcases a house claiming 50 to 60 percent energy savings through features like narrow windows, urethane insulated doors, magnetic weather stripping, caulked joints, and two by six walls. Charter signers gather for European Security Conference

HELSINKI Finland AP leaders of Europe and North America gather for a three day European Security Conference to sign a 30000 word non binding charter accepting the postwar map of Europe in exchange for greater civil liberties for East Europeans. Brezhnev Ford Gierek arrive as security is tightened for the neutral nation with 4.7 million people. The charter aims to moral weight not legal force and signing is set for Friday.

Oil profits fall as recession and taxes bite firms

New York AP reports three major oil companies posting sharp second quarter and first half declines. Gulf Oil earnings slid 49 percent to 160 million, Union Oil of California down 47 percent to 42 million, Phillips 10 percent to 111.2 million. First-half profits dropped 28 percent at Phillips, 46 percent at Union, 41 percent at Gulf as tax changes and weaker demand trimmed output and revenue.

Music Camp draws students from four states at U of A

Senior high students from Arkansas Oklahoma Texas and Missouri attend a two week Music Camp at the University of Arkansas finishing Friday with band choral and orchestral concerts at 7 p.m. in the Arkansas Union Ballroom. Two 300-pound seals found in shark's belly

HARBOR seals each weighing 300 pounds were found in the belly of a 14-foot great white shark caught off Catalina Island. The 1,000-pound predator was brought to San Diego where scientists dissected it. Two seals weighed 175 and 125 pounds.
