Tuskegee syphilis study participant recalls secrecy
Local doctor J W Williams recalls that participants were not told the study’s purpose or details. The Tuskegee Study began in 1932, involving 600 Black men. at least seven died from syphilis, and officials say none of the 400 with syphilis were treated. HEW began an investigation into why the study continued after penicillin became standard.
