Long sets tone in welfare reform hearings
Senator Russell B. Long opened Senate Finance Committee hearings on President Nixon’s welfare plan. He said the panel will back a workfare approach over guaranteed income, as administration witnesses Richardson and Hodgson argued for reform. The House already tied welfare to Social Security benefits, proposing 2400 dollars a year for a family of four and work requirements. Long warned the Senate will not accept the House terms, insisting eligibility must favor work and cap benefits for nonworking able bodied adults.
