German forces claimed to have taken a city as the Red Army fought grimly at Novocherkassk 26 miles northeast of Rostov. Soviet pilots and Allied tanks supported a push to halt the German advance while fresh Nazi reinforcements arrived. Soviet scout planes noted new German fighter squadrons in the southern Don sector and American Airacobras operated north of Rostov near Voronezh in support of Russian attacks. Red Star reported Soviet planes damaged the Germans near Stalingrad as they fought off balance.

Rubber industry claims 75 percent mileage with scrap and virgin rubber

Navy enlistment of M. L. White Blevins local note

North Little Rock July 27. Mer lon Leslie White of Blevins son of Mr and Mrs M L White volunteered as an apprentice seaman in the United States Coast Guard at the Recruiting Station in the North Little Rock post office last week. White attended Blevins High School and worked at a mercantile store at Blevins at enlistment. The Coast Guard may be called on to perform a wide range of duties including enforcing maritime regulations and aiding navigation.

Dr Grayson Receives U S Medical Title

Dr W B Grayson state health officer was commissioned a senior surgeon in the reserve of the U S Public Health Service by Federal Security Administrator Paul V McNutt. The rank is likened to lieutenant colonel in the army and he could be called to active duty at any post. Surgeon General Thomas Parran assured he would remain at his present post unless the world situation changed.

Fort Smith Wins State Semi Pro Ball Title

Fort Smith All Stars won the 1942 Arkansas semi pro baseball championship by defeating Earle 12 to 0, finishing the tournament undefeated and earning a spot in the national event in Wichita. Nelson Rosenstein struck out 22, while Harle’s errors aided the lead in the first inning. Earle had earlier beaten Helena 5 to 2 in a preliminary game.
