Malnutrition May Injure a Child’s Brain
MIT hosted an international conference on malnutrition learning and behavior with experts from six continents. Dr. Nevin Scrimshaw warned that in the first two years brain development largely completes and a combination of malnutrition infectious disease and social deprivation can permanently damage a child’s brain. He noted that in the United States malnutrition is not a major driver of mental retardation except in certain groups and metabolic disorders. in underdeveloped countries the risk is greater. The lack of mental stimulation in poverty and social neglect compounds the effects, leading to mental dullness and apathy.
