Waves Smash On Bikini Island And Radioactivity Tests
Admiral Blandy described seven to ten foot waves crashing on Bikini Island shores as palm trees splintered. Respondents aboard the command ship scrambled to identify afloat vessels as mist cleared and the Sara was glimpsed. Hours later ships entered the lagoon to sample radioactivity but were driven back. The lagoon showed a green haze and a large hole in the coral bottom. In New York cotton markets, prices fell further under liquidations with futures down about 35 cents.
