The National Weather Service predicts warm temperatures across Arkansas with widely scattered thunderstorms mainly in the southern third. Rain chances are 40 percent today, 30 percent tonight and Thursday in the southern region as a front moves through the area.
The Hope Star reports Arkansas weather with lingering trough instability and thunderstorms. Rainfall amounts include Pine Bluff 0.6 inches and 0.22 inches in Oklahoma, with Little Rock 0.8 inches. Highs will reach upper 80s to mid 90s, nights mid 60s to mid 70s. Also includes staff bylines, AP credit, and subscription rates.
Lonoke County deputy sheriff said a potential break in the shooting deaths of Jacksonville teens James Thompson 17 and Elaine Dolan 14 may involve a Louisiana lead. Sheriff Brummett traveled to Louisiana with a state investigator to pursue possible further leads as the investigation extends to other states.
About 150 high school students from McNeil Village Magnolia Lewisville Hope Emmet Cale Laneburg Oak Grove Saratoga and Lockesburg attend a NYC Career Orientation Training Program at Red River Vocational Technical School this week. Knight Newspapers Inc and Ridder Publications Inc unanimously approve a preliminary merger creating the largest American newspaper group by circulation. The combined entity would own 35 newspapers with about 3.6 million daily readers and be headquartered in Miami. Gannett remains the largest by papers. Shareholder ratification necessary.
Washington AP report notes FCC three day hearings on prohibiting joint ownership of newspapers and television stations in the same city and cross ownership with radio. If approved 231 daily papers owning broadcasts would be forced to divest within five years. Justice Department urges breakup citing concentrated power and leads testimony with the American Newspaper Publishers Association. The department argues cross ownership may be limited to smaller markets.
The Supreme Court opened with Chief Justice Burger reading the full opinion on the privilege issue. Spectators lined the steps before the session as Justices prepared to rule on whether President Nixon must surrender White House tapes and documents for possible use in the criminal case.
The Hempstead County Republican Committee met in the Citizens National Bank board room and distributed tickets for a kickoff fundraiser offering 200 gallons of gasoline to a lucky winner. A feasibility study on establishing a Health Maintenance Organization at Camden was urged by the state Comprehensive Health Planning Council. The group asked the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to fund the study. The council also approved five hospital and nursing home projects totalling about 3.0 million aimed at qualifying for federal funds. Projects include a 65‑bed Johnson County Hospital in Clarksville priced at 2.1 million and the Delta Counseling and Guidance Center in Monticello at 157 thousand. The Berlin Philharmonic, led by Herbert von Karajan, will tour the United States in November with concerts in New York, Washington, Chicago, and Boston.

Lloyd Bucher, officer in charge of the Pueblo during its 1968 seizure by North Korea, will speak at Ouachita Baptist University during a luncheon that closes the festival showcase workshop opening Friday. He and his crew were captured January 23 1968 and held for eleven months before acquittal.
