Firestorm blaze and irony in wartime Oregon incident
State Forester Nels Rogers returned home from directing crews against the largest wartime forest fire in Oregon to find his neighbor’s house ablaze. A fireman rebuffed his aid with the comment we have this one under control. In Kansas City flood scenes water supplies faltered as a basin overflowed and pumps stopped until a tractor powered a temporary water plant and relief arrived.

Topeka Kite Suspected Chimera Revealed as Toy
Light refraction and imagination led Topeka residents to describe a sagging balloon with anchor chains a may-basset in the sky and a white inner tube two thousand feet above the city. Sleuths traced the string to Winter General Hospital’s Italian prisoners of war and found the object to be a white three-stick kite.

Grace Hyde Stops Car Start Without Driver
In Salt Lake City a 30 year old Mrs Grace Hyde jumped into the front seat to stop a car rolling downhill after losing its driver. A bystander noted the incident as a daring rescue with bystanders nearby and no injuries reported. In Omaha traffic waited as a street scene unfolded on Spring Lake Boulevard. A pigeon briefly disrupted Chicago grain trading when it flew into the boardroom and perched above the pits before traders resumed work.
