A Sunday tribute recalls Apollo 11 on July 20 1969 as mankind’s giant step. It honors Neil Armstrong Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins for achieving the lunar landing and journey home with the Eagle the Columbia and the remembered three aboard.
Massachusetts police filed a formal complaint charging Senator Edward M. Kennedy with leaving the scene of an accident after a weekend crash on Chappaquiddick Island near Martha’s Vineyard. A young woman was killed and Kennedy injured. a hearing is set for July 28 in Edgartown courthouse. A crowd gathered outside the courthouse as Police Chief Arena said there was no negligence alleged.
Apollo astronauts probe the moon’s crust collecting diverse rock samples and a five inch soil core. They report a moist appearing soil that could hint at water or life, while noting the surface is dust laden and the rocks include basalt like lava rocks and biotite rich in water. Russia landed Luna 15 on the moon amid signals from Jodrell Bank Observatory near Manchester. The unmanned craft aimed for a soft lunar landing in the Sea of Crises about 500 miles from Apollo site preparations, with observers awaiting confirmation of contact or return signals.
The Armstrong lunar landing drew tens of millions as people in Europe and beyond watched live coverage. Crowds gathered at London satellites and Paris cafes while Pope Paul VI praised mankind's new destiny. Pravda offered only a small headline.
