South African bank note collector owns world’s rarest paper currency
A Johannesburg collector, Jimmie Lawrence, houses about 50 000 notes worth around 245 000 dollars from across the world. His holdings include medieval and 14th century specimens, with African notes a specialty. He co founded a bank note collectors association in 1959 and helped form the International Bank Note Society in 1960. Lawrence displays notes in varied materials including paper silk cotton and leather. The collection features a 1368 Chinese mulberry bark note insured at 7500 dollars and a 1946 Hungarian inflation note with 100 followed by 18 zeros. He prizes a besieged Mafeking note signed by Baden-Powell. He hopes to someday donate the collection to be permanently displayed rather than kept in a vault.
