Thunderstorms dumped heavy rains and strong winds across the midcontinent with large hail. East Central Kansas and neighboring regions were swamped while flash flooding occurred in northeastern Kansas. Four to five inches drenched parts of Kansas from late Wednesday into today. Topeka reported over an inch in one hour.
Weather station report covers 24 hours ending 7 am Thursday with high 93 and low 70. State forecast calls for partly cloudy warm conditions tonight with scattered thundershowers in the northwest, considerable cloudiness Friday with scattered storms and cooler northwest. Lows tonight in the low 70s, highs Friday mid 80s to low 90s.
The Negro Community calendar reports revival services in progress at the Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ on North Bell Street led by Evangelist Elder L A McFadden of Arizona with special music by Mrs Tressie L McKinney of San Diego and Odell Dennis Jr of Salinar California. Elder O N Dennis is pastor.
The Star installs its third Compugraphic phototypesetter in the composing room on Wednesday. The new machine uses a keyboard for rapid composition, replacing Morisawa units whose operator hand-assembled lines. Star staff shown with the machine include Judy Gray and Gene Allen, with startup help by Danny Lewallen.
Former Congressman David Pryor will be the feature speaker at the annual banquet of the Central Arkansas Development Council in Malvern Arkansas. The private nonprofit agency runs programs across Saline Hot Spring and Clark counties during the event Friday night.
In New Orleans AP reports the Louisiana State Racing Commission postponed final terms for placing Jefferson Downs stock into a trusteeship. A July 26 hearing will define the trust agreement, with a full commission vote to follow. Both sides had signaled willingness to accept a trust if conditions are met amid an ongoing felony-related firestorm.
Fire Chief James Cobb said a vacant house at 203 East Rose Hill Street burned at 11:40 p.m. last night. Firefighters saved the neighboring dwelling, which suffered minor damage.
The Nixon administration backed its claim that it did not originate hidden White House microphones by filing affidavits from two Johnson era White House staffers. One affidavit says listening devices were installed by Johnson by 1965 in multiple locations and operable at the push of a button. The other notes a 1968 baseboard microphone near the Oval Office.
President Nixon, recovering from viral pneumonia, plans a full schedule next week after discharge from Bethesda Naval Hospital. He will fly to Camp David for a weekend rest and aims to resume full duties Monday, with his first public appearance on Saturday hosting the Shah and Empress of Iran for a two day state visit.
