Tenant Farming in U S on Increase

Government programs push tenant farmers toward land ownership with Bankhead Jones aid. Wiley Langley of Ussper Alabama becomes the first tenant buyer, taking a $3,800 loan to purchase a 164 acre cotton farm while diversifying crops and improving the family home. The Langley case signals growing tenant ownership among 7,000 similar families aided by FSA.

Tenants repay farm loans ahead of due date

The report notes many of the nation’s tenants are paying loans early and in installments. About 103000 dollars are due, while nearly 134000 dollars has been paid into the Federal Treasury, with repayments reaching eight six percent of mortgages. The majority are paying smaller installments than prior rent and new motivation comes from working for themselves rather than absentee landlords. Congress plans gradual Bankhead Jones expansion to aid about 1100 families yearly, but full solvency remains generations away as tenancy numbers rise. Department officials remain hopeful and have started targeted actions.
