A medical man is abducted at night by a masked rider and forced into a perilous horseback escape. The doctor, Little Doc, plans to treat a wounded man while fearing for a boy with scarlet fever as the scene shifts toward a dangerous confrontation and a potential continuation.
Democratic leaders reported the White House conference with President Truman extended to about 70 minutes. They said no decision on a congressional recess was made and that any new recommendations would be discussed by Senate and House leaders. A top official suggested Truman may seek authorization to limit production by large steel users, while denying plans for rationing or price and wage controls.

American and South Korean ground forces credited with destroying 28 Red tanks 32 trucks and 14 railway box cars. B 29 Superfortress bombers struck deep into North Korean territory dumping 400 tons on railroad yards near Seoul 90 miles from the front. Other B 29s hit the Chungju area closer to the front.
New York July 17 UP Coffee tires raised four in five cents a pound today by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea without stop bag packed brands. New prices: Tight O Clock 74 cents Red Circle 16 Bokar 77. Trade circles expect other chains to follow. The A and P attributed the increases not to the Korean war but to higher green coffee prices from crop conditions.
