Showers Likely As Cold Front Approaches Arkansas

The Associated Press reports rising chances of showers and thunderstorms in Arkansas as a cold front nears. The National Weather Service says the front will move south-southeast and reach Arkansas by late today, bringing warm moist air from the Gulf.

Copper strike widens in Arizona and nationwide lines

Workers across four major copper producers including American Smelting and Refining and Magma Copper join pickets as 26 unions push for a three year contract. Wages of 7 to 20 percent were tentatively agreed but health, pensions and holidays stalled talks. Up to 30,000 workers could be idled, with Arizona bearing about half of the nation’s copper output.

Mrs. Stewart named to KmHA Committee

Ora B. Stewart of Oran has been appointed to the Hempstead County Committee of the Farmers Home Administration. The county panel includes W.Y. Jackson and Eugene E. Tollett. The committee helps screen loan eligibility and advises on loans to soil and water districts and other entities.

Four inmates escape from Washington County Jail in Fayetteville

Four prisoners escaped from the Washington County Jail in Fayetteville as they broke bars spot welded in a window above the cell door, reached a false ceiling, and escaped through a window between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sheriff Bill Long confirmed the details.

Supreme Court to hear press gag case in New Orleans

In New Orleans today two newspapers asked the Supreme Court to block a Criminal District Court judge’s news coverage restrictions in a murder trial. They contend the rules curb First and Fourteenth Amendment rights by barring editorials before trial, witness interviews, leaks, and publication of prior criminal records.
