Germs Destroying at Pine Bluff Arsenal Begin 48 Week Process

At Pine Bluff Arsenal the 48 week program to destroy the U S stockpile of germ warfare agents begins. Col John Stoner says destruction will end around mid April 1972 and the arsenal will be repurposed for peacetime research by the FDA. Agents include francisella tularensis and bacillus anthracis with toxins like botulinum and staphylococcus enterotoxin. Destruction uses caustic solution and 280 degree sterilization before burial on Army property.

Youth Touring Choir to Perform in Edna Concert

A 35 member Youth Touring Choir from First Baptist Church Edna Texas will present a concert Thursday at seven thirty in the evening at the church. The choir has toured South Texas Louisiana and Arkansas. Director is Steve Faulkner Music Director. A post concert fellowship will follow in Fellowship Hall for all young people. Public invitation.

The U S Board of Parole will hear parole petitions July 28 from imprisoned antiwar priests Philip and Daniel Berrigan. Philip began serving July 5 1968 and is eligible Sept 14. Daniel began Aug 11 1970 and is eligible Aug 2. Both are confined at Danbury Federal Prison for destroying draft records.

Schwigen Is Freed From Jail in Arkansas Case

The Arkansas Supreme Court granted a writ of habeas corpus freeing Richard Schwigen after over 40 days in White County Jail at Searcy. The court found White County deputies detained him without proper compliance with state law, based on a Knox County warrant alleging theft of more than $150. Schwigen had not had a hearing, nor any Arkansas fugitive proceeding, and his attorney argued custody should have followed swift judicial review.
