Truman Attack Draws Broad Criticism In Congress
Washington July 14 1947 President Truman assailed “selfish interests” pressing drastic federal spending cuts while facing Democratic and Republican critics in Congress. He defended expansion to avert a recession, warned against political maneuvers, and cited bi party pressure over tax policy and anti inflation measures as factors shaping his plan. Truman pressures steel giants over proposed inquiry board
President Truman urged United States Steel, Republic and Bethlehem to reconsider their rejection of a 60 day strike truce plan. He argued the three should submit the pension dispute to a public inquiry board, while smaller firms and the CIO United Steel Workers union backed the plan. The big three contended the move bypassed Taft Hartley law procedures and could imperil health and safety.

Escaped Slayer Clings to Water Tower
Raymond Jutila, a 21 year old inmate from Warren Ohio, escaped the Lima state hospital for the criminally insane and climbed a 130 foot water tower just outside the institution. Guards and police attempted to coax him down with food and water while spotlights stayed on him through the night. He alternated between surveying guards from girders and resting on a narrow canvas as authorities tried steam hoses and conversation to end the stand off. The hospital lowered the water level to deny him a drink but he still dangled a makeshift rope with a tobacco tin as a lure and remained atop the tower through the night.
