Youth in Australia to stand trial for Calwell shooting
A 19 year old Sydney youth Peter Raymond Kogan was ordered to stand trial for shooting Labor Party Leader Arthur Calwell after claiming a need to do something out of the ordinary to avoid being a nobody. Detective Ballard quoted his motive as opposition to Calwell politics. Calwell testified a bullet fragment was removed from his chin and he survived the attack after addressing an election rally. African Train Wreck Kills 25
A train hit a bus at a level crossing near Potgietersrus, killing 25 Africans and injuring 28, three critically. Fourteen bus passengers escaped injury as the collision occurred 180 miles northeast of Johannesburg.
Arkansan named editor of Texas Baptist Standard
John J. Hurt Jr., from Conway Ark, has become editor of the Baptist Standard in Texas. He resigned as editor of the Christian Index in Atlanta, Georgia after 19 years. Hurt previously worked for the Associated Press in Chattanooga Memphis and New York. The Index is the nation’s oldest Baptist weekly.
