Oil Tank Farm Fire Ravages Wilmington California
In Wilmington California July 18 civilian and military firemen fought through the night to quell the final flames of a Union Oil seven tank farm blaze that may have caused about 2 million dollars in damage. Four 80,000 barrel gasoline tanks exploded and four others burned, threatening Los Angeles harbor area military and coast guard facilities. Flames still smoldered in tanks and lines as crews hoped to extinguish the fire. Early loss estimates ranged up to two million dollars. a spokesman later reaffirmed about two million. Three workers were injured when a high pressure hose caused a line to whip, injuring Fred Friess and two construction workers, Donald Daly and G M Montgomery. The heat melted tank walls and fumes menaced nearby facilities as navy tugs and guardsmen aided with sea water. Commander David H. Bartlet called in military help after the blaze became a major harbor threat.
